William Gamble (business)

William Gamble (1830-1891) was an Irish-American businessman best known as one of the co-founders of Procter & Gamble (P&G). He partnered with James Gamble, a candle maker (and his brother-in-law), to form the company in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1837.

Born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland, William Gamble immigrated to the United States. Before partnering with James Gamble, he initially worked as a soap maker. He was instrumental in the early success of Procter & Gamble, leveraging his soap making experience and business acumen to help the company grow from a small, local operation into a major national brand. He primarily oversaw the soap manufacturing aspects of the business while James Gamble focused on candle production.

Gamble's involvement in Procter & Gamble continued throughout his life. He served in various leadership roles within the company, contributing to its expansion and diversification.
