Kinnaru

Kinnaru (किन्नरु) is a term originating from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, referring to a mythical race or creature that is part human and part animal, often depicted as having a human head and torso attached to the body of a bird or a horse. The female Kinnari is often depicted as a celestial musician and dancer, renowned for her melodious voice and graceful movements. The male Kinnara is often depicted playing a musical instrument.

In Hindu iconography, Kinnaras are generally considered benevolent beings, inhabiting the celestial realms and often associated with Kubera, the god of wealth. They are symbols of love, devotion, and musical skill. They are frequently depicted in temple carvings, artwork, and literature.

In Buddhist traditions, Kinnaras are also considered benevolent figures and are often included in Jataka tales and other Buddhist stories. They represent skillful activity and dedication to the dharma.
