Xenia (band)
Xenia was a German Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) band, formed in 1982 in Cologne. The band was primarily known for their song "Der Taucher" ("The Diver"), which became a significant hit in Germany in 1983. The lineup of Xenia consisted of Christine Ziervogel (vocals), Uwe Hoffmann (guitar), and Ralf Engelbrecht (bass).
The band's musical style was characterized by synth-heavy arrangements, a driving rhythm section, and Ziervogel's distinctive, often melancholic vocals. While "Der Taucher" achieved widespread popularity, Xenia released other songs and albums but did not reach the same level of commercial success. They contributed to the vibrant and diverse landscape of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement, which was characterized by its experimentation with electronic sounds, often unconventional lyrics, and a DIY ethos.
Xenia's career was relatively short-lived, disbanding in the mid-1980s. Despite their limited time in the spotlight, "Der Taucher" remains a recognizable and fondly remembered song from the Neue Deutsche Welle era, frequently featured on compilation albums and radio stations specializing in 1980s music. Information on their discography and exact years of activity can vary, underscoring the relatively underground nature of some bands within the Neue Deutsche Welle scene.
