The Antlers (band)
The Antlers were an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York, active from 2006 to 2022. The band was initially the solo project of singer/songwriter Peter Silberman, evolving into a collaborative group with the addition of drummer Michael Lerner and multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci.
Known for their atmospheric sound, emotional depth, and intricate songwriting, The Antlers' music often explores themes of loss, grief, and recovery. Their sound blends elements of indie rock, ambient music, and chamber pop, characterized by Silberman's distinctive falsetto vocals, layered instrumentation, and evocative lyrics.
The band gained widespread recognition with their 2009 album, Hospice, a concept album that uses a metaphorical narrative of a hospice worker's relationship with a terminally ill patient to explore themes of codependency and emotional trauma. Hospice was praised for its raw emotionality and innovative storytelling.
The Antlers released several subsequent albums, including Burst Apart (2011), Undersea (2012), Familiars (2014), and Green to Gold (2021). These albums showcased the band's evolving sound and continued exploration of complex emotional landscapes.
In 2022, The Antlers announced their disbandment, citing a desire to pursue individual creative endeavors. Their music continues to be influential in the indie rock scene and is cherished by fans for its poignant lyrics and atmospheric soundscapes.
