Paradise Square (musical)

Paradise Square is a musical that premiered on Broadway in 2022. It is set in the Five Points neighborhood of New York City in 1863, during the American Civil War. The musical explores the complex relationships between Black and Irish immigrants living in the area, focusing on their shared struggles, cultural exchange, and the tensions that arise amidst racial prejudice and economic hardship.

The story centers around a saloon and boarding house run by Nelly O'Brien, an Irish immigrant married to a Black man. Paradise Square portrays the community's unique blend of music and dance, as well as the challenges they face with the looming shadow of the Civil War draft and racial inequality. The musical incorporates elements of tap dance, Irish step dance, and traditional African American music to tell its story.

The original Broadway production received ten Tony Award nominations, winning one for Best Choreography. However, the production was also marred by controversy, including accusations of creative disputes and financial difficulties. Paradise Square closed on Broadway in July 2022 after a relatively short run.
