Democratic Centre Union (Greece)

The Democratic Centre Union (Greek: Δημοκρατική Ένωσις Κέντρου, Dimokratiki Enosis Kentrou, abbreviated as ΔΕΚ - DEK), was a short-lived political alliance formed in Greece in 1977. It was primarily composed of remnants of the pre-dictatorship Centre Union (EK), aiming to revive the liberal and centrist traditions of that party.

The alliance was led by Georgios Mavros, a prominent figure in Greek politics who had also led the Centre Union - New Forces (EK-ND) in the 1974 elections. The DEK sought to appeal to voters who felt unrepresented by the two dominant forces in Greek politics at the time: New Democracy (ND) on the right and PASOK on the left.

However, the Democratic Centre Union failed to gain significant traction in the 1977 parliamentary elections. It secured only 11 seats in the Hellenic Parliament with a percentage of the popular vote that was considerably lower than its predecessors.

Following the disappointing election result, the Democratic Centre Union dissolved. Many of its members subsequently joined other political parties, particularly PASOK, reflecting a shift in the Greek political landscape towards a two-party system. The DEK represents a notable, albeit brief, attempt to maintain a distinct centrist voice in the post-dictatorship era. Its failure highlights the challenges faced by centrist parties in a polarized political environment.
