Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (1912-1988): An American fighter pilot and Marine Corps officer who was a recipient of the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. He is best known for his command of the "Black Sheep Squadron" (VMF-214) during World War II. His life and exploits were popularized by the 1970s television series Baa Baa Black Sheep (also known as Black Sheep Squadron).

Boyington Oak: A historic live oak tree in Mobile, Alabama, named for Charles R.S. Boyington, who was hanged near the tree in 1846 for a murder he may or may not have committed. The legend surrounding the tree holds that Boyington maintained his innocence and, as he was being hanged, predicted that a tree would sprout from his grave as proof. A tree did indeed grow, and is now known as the Boyington Oak.
