William Johnstone (actor)

William Johnstone (1908 – 1996) was a British actor, born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. He was a prolific performer on stage, film, and television, spanning a career of over five decades.

Johnstone was known for his distinguished voice and commanding presence, often playing authority figures, including doctors, military officers, and lawyers. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

His stage credits included numerous productions in London's West End, as well as touring productions. He frequently appeared in plays by Shakespeare and other classic playwrights.

On screen, Johnstone appeared in a wide range of films, from early British productions to later character roles. Some notable film appearances include roles in The First of the Few (1942), The Courtneys of Curzon Street (1947), The Wooden Horse (1950), The Dam Busters (1955), Murder, She Said (1961), The Great Escape (1963) and Hamlet (1969).

His television work was extensive, encompassing dramas, comedies, and serials. He featured in series such as Dixon of Dock Green, The Avengers, The Saint, Z Cars, The Onedin Line, The Professionals, Poldark and Doctor Who (in the serial The Seeds of Death, 1969).

William Johnstone was married to Esma Cannon. He died in 1996, aged 88.
