Creed (film)
Creed is a 2015 American sports drama film directed by Ryan Coogler, written by Coogler and Aaron Covington, and produced by Sylvester Stallone. It is the seventh film in the Rocky film series and a spin-off sequel to Rocky Balboa (2006). The film stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis "Donnie" Johnson Creed, the illegitimate son of Rocky Balboa's deceased rival and friend, Apollo Creed, and Stallone reprising his role as Rocky Balboa, who becomes Donnie's trainer and mentor.
The film follows Adonis as he seeks to forge his own boxing legacy, stepping out of his father's shadow. Despite his mother's wishes for him to pursue a safer career, Adonis moves to Philadelphia to convince the reluctant Rocky Balboa to train him. Rocky, initially hesitant, eventually agrees, seeing in Adonis the same fire and talent he recognized in Apollo.
Creed explores themes of family legacy, mentorship, identity, and overcoming adversity. Adonis struggles with the weight of his father's name and reputation while trying to establish himself as a boxer in his own right. Rocky, battling his own personal demons and the effects of aging, finds renewed purpose in training Adonis.
The film received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and writing, and was a commercial success. Stallone received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, and won the Golden Globe Award in the same category.
The success of Creed led to two sequels: Creed II (2018) and Creed III (2023).
