WCBS-FM
WCBS-FM is a commercial radio station licensed to New York City. It broadcasts at 101.1 MHz FM and is owned by Audacy, Inc. WCBS-FM is known for its classic hits format, playing primarily pop and rock music from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The station's studios are located in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Manhattan, and its transmitter is located at the Empire State Building.
WCBS-FM has a long and storied history, dating back to its initial sign-on in 1940 as WCBW-FM, a sister station to WCBS (880 AM). For many years, the station was simulcast with its AM counterpart. In the late 1960s, the station adopted a progressive rock format, and in the early 1970s, a top 40 format.
In 1972, WCBS-FM switched to its long-running oldies format, becoming one of the first stations in the United States to embrace this format. Through the years, the station has consistently ranked among the top stations in the New York market.
In 2005, WCBS-FM briefly switched to a Jack FM format, a widely criticized move that alienated many long-time listeners. However, after public outcry and declining ratings, the station reverted to its classic hits format in 2007.
Today, WCBS-FM continues to be a popular radio station in the New York City area, known for its familiar music and on-air personalities. The station can also be streamed online and through the Audacy app.
