Aebutina
Aebutina was a Roman gens, or family, of patrician status. Members of this gens are known primarily from the early Republic. While some achieved prominence, the Aebutii never reached the highest offices of the Roman state, and the gens gradually faded into obscurity.
The nomen Aebutius is generally thought to be of Etruscan origin, placing the gens among those ancient families incorporated into the Roman aristocracy at the founding of the Republic.
Notable members of the gens include:
-
Titus Aebutius Helva: Consul in 499 BC, in the early years of the Roman Republic. He fought bravely at the Battle of Lake Regillus.
-
Postumus Aebutius Helva Cornicen: Consul in 442 BC. The meaning of "Cornicen" in his name is uncertain.
-
Lucius Aebutius: Magister Equitum (Master of the Horse) in 302 BC, serving under the dictator Marcus Valerius Maximus Corvus.
