Chibi (style)
Chibi is a Japanese slang word describing something short and cute. In anime and manga, the chibi style (also sometimes called super deformed or SD) is a specific style of caricature where characters are drawn with exaggerated features, typically featuring a large head, a small, stubby body, and simplified facial features. Proportions are often drastically altered, resulting in characters that are much smaller and rounder than their original depictions.
The chibi style is frequently used for comedic effect, to emphasize a character's cuteness, or to simplify drawing complex scenes for easier animation or manga paneling. Chibi versions of characters are often used in promotional material, merchandise, and fan art. While typically associated with anime and manga, the chibi style has also been adopted by artists working in other visual media and from different cultural backgrounds.
Key characteristics of chibi characters include:
- Large Head: The head is disproportionately large compared to the body, often taking up half or more of the character's overall size.
- Small Body: The body is short, stubby, and simplified. Limbs are often small and rounded.
- Simplified Features: Facial features are simplified, often featuring large, round eyes, a small nose, and a simple mouth. Detailed features are often omitted or reduced.
- Emphasis on Cutness: The overall effect is intended to be cute and endearing.
