Iain Stewart (physicist)

Iain Stewart is a theoretical physicist specializing in effective field theories (EFTs) for particle physics and nuclear physics. He is known for his work on Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), a powerful EFT used to describe energetic particles interacting with soft, collinear radiation, particularly in the context of quantum chromodynamics (QCD).

Stewart received his Ph.D. in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1998. He is currently a Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

His research interests broadly include:

  • Effective Field Theories: Development and application of EFTs to address problems in particle physics and nuclear physics.
  • Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD): Studying the strong force and the behavior of quarks and gluons.
  • Heavy Quark Physics: Investigating the properties of heavy quarks, such as bottom and charm quarks.
  • Precision Calculations for the LHC: Developing theoretical tools to improve the accuracy of predictions for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Stewart has made significant contributions to the understanding of factorization in QCD, the resummation of large logarithms in perturbative calculations, and the development of new techniques for precision phenomenology. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. His work is highly cited and has had a significant impact on the field of high-energy physics.
