The Sentinals (band)
The Sentinals were an American instrumental surf rock band, best known for their 1961 hit single "Latinia." Formed in San Luis Obispo, California, the band consisted of lead guitarist Tommy Nunes, rhythm guitarist Johnny Sens, bassist Kenny Nakamura, saxophonist Joe Olivas, and drummer Denny Turner.
Their sound was characterized by a heavy emphasis on Latin rhythms and melodies, differentiating them from many of their contemporaries in the surf music scene. While "Latinia" remains their signature song, they released several other singles and albums throughout the early 1960s.
The Sentinals achieved regional success in California and beyond, touring extensively and appearing on popular television shows. However, their popularity waned with the decline of the surf rock genre in the mid-1960s.
Despite their relatively short period of mainstream success, The Sentinals are remembered as an influential band in the development of instrumental surf rock, particularly for their incorporation of Latin influences. Their music continues to be enjoyed by surf music enthusiasts and collectors.
The band broke up in the mid-1960s, with members pursuing other musical endeavors.
