72nd Street station (New York Central Railroad)
The 72nd Street station was a local stop on the New York Central Railroad's Hudson Division (later the Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line) in Manhattan, New York City. It was located at the intersection of West 72nd Street and Riverside Boulevard, offering convenient access to the Upper West Side neighborhood.
The station was originally built as part of the elevated railroad system that predated the current Metro-North commuter rail. As the New York Central converted to underground or open-cut lines during the early 20th century, stations like 72nd Street were gradually phased out.
The 72nd Street station served passengers traveling between Grand Central Terminal and points north along the Hudson River. Its closure likely resulted from a combination of factors, including the consolidation of stations to improve service efficiency and the decreasing demand for local stops within Manhattan as subway lines became more prevalent.
Today, no trace of the original 72nd Street station remains. The site is now part of the Riverside Park South development. The nearest active commuter rail station is at 125th Street – Harlem.
