Socleus

A socleus, also sometimes referred to as a plinth block or base block, is a slightly projecting block or molding located at the bottom of a wall, pier, or column. Its primary function is to provide a visual and structural base for the feature it supports, often serving as a transition element between the floor and the vertical element. Soclei can be simple and utilitarian, or highly ornate and decorative.

Historically, soclei have been used extensively in classical architecture and are often employed to raise the object it supports above the ground, protecting it from moisture and damage. The design of a socleus typically complements the architectural style of the building and the overall design of the element it supports. It can be made from a variety of materials, including stone, wood, concrete, or metal.

The term "socleus" can also refer to a low pedestal or base supporting a statue or other object. In this context, it provides a stable platform and enhances the prominence of the artwork. The size and shape of the socleus are usually dictated by the dimensions and aesthetic requirements of the supported object.
