Spinaway

Spinaway was a prominent American Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1918. Bred and owned by Joseph E. Widener's Elmendorf Farm, she was known for her exceptional speed and dominance as a two-year-old. Spinaway was undefeated in nine starts as a juvenile, earning her the title of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.

Her notable victories included the Spinaway Stakes, a prestigious race for two-year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course, which is named in her honor. Other significant wins included the Matron Stakes and the Futurity Stakes (at that time, open to both colts and fillies).

Despite her promising start, Spinaway's racing career was cut short due to injury. She did not race after her two-year-old season. Following her racing career, she became a successful broodmare, producing several stakes winners.

Spinaway's legacy endures through the Spinaway Stakes, which remains a significant event in American horse racing and a key stepping stone towards the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Her influence can also be seen in the pedigrees of many modern Thoroughbreds.
