Ann Veronica (TV series)

Ann Veronica is a 1964 British television serial based on the 1909 novel of the same name by H.G. Wells. Produced by the BBC, it starred Rosemary Nicols as Ann Veronica Stanley, a young woman in Edwardian England who defies societal expectations to pursue her own independence and love. The six-part serial dramatized Ann Veronica's struggles against her domineering father, her involvement with the suffragette movement, and her scandalous relationship with a married scientist, Capes (played by Keith Barron). The adaptation was notable for its frank portrayal of themes such as women's rights, free love, and scientific exploration, which were considered controversial for the time. It was directed by Michael Hayes and adapted for television by Donald Bull. The serial is now considered lost, as the BBC's archival policies at the time resulted in the wiping of the original tapes.
