John Cahill (footballer)

John Cahill (born 29 September 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach. He is considered a legend of the Port Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).

Cahill played his entire SANFL career for Port Adelaide, debuting in 1960 and retiring in 1973. He was a key member of a dominant Port Adelaide team, playing in seven premiership-winning sides (1962, 1963, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971) and captaining the club from 1968 to 1973. Known for his toughness and leadership, Cahill primarily played as a ruckman and key defender.

Following his playing career, Cahill embarked on a highly successful coaching career, also primarily with Port Adelaide. He coached the club to a further six SANFL premierships (1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1988 and 1990). He is highly regarded for his tactical acumen and motivational skills.

Cahill also coached the South Australian state representative team on several occasions.

He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996, recognizing his significant contributions to Australian rules football. John Cahill Oval at Alberton Oval, Port Adelaide’s home ground, is named in his honour.
