The Day After (2017 film)
The Day After (Korean: 그 후; RR: Geu-hu) is a 2017 South Korean black and white drama film written, produced, and directed by Hong Sang-soo. The film stars Kim Min-hee, Kwon Hae-hyo, Kim Sae-byuk, and Cho Yoon-hee. It premiered in competition at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
The film centers on Bongwan, a married man who is going through a difficult time after his affair with an employee ends. Areum, a new employee, arrives at his office for her first day of work. Bongwan's wife misunderstands Areum to be the woman he had the affair with, leading to complex and emotionally charged interactions. The film explores themes of relationships, infidelity, regret, and the search for meaning in everyday life, typical of Hong Sang-soo's filmography. The narrative structure is fragmented, with scenes unfolding in a non-linear fashion, allowing for a nuanced portrayal of the characters' perspectives and emotions.
