Rin Kaiho

Rin Kaiho (林 海峰), also known as Lin Haifeng, (born May 6, 1942) is a Taiwanese professional Go player. He is one of the most significant figures in modern Go history, achieving considerable success in Japan.

Born in Shanghai, Rin Kaiho relocated to Japan at the age of 9 to study Go under the tutelage of Go Seigen, another legendary figure in the game. He was known for his aggressive and attacking style of play, often employing complex and risky strategies.

Rin Kaiho attained professional status in 1955. He achieved 9-dan, the highest rank, in 1969. His major title wins include multiple Meijin (Master), Kisei (Kisei), and Honinbo titles, establishing him as a leading player in the Japanese Go world for many years. He challenged and defeated the reigning Honinbo, Eio Sakata, in 1968, beginning a period of dominance. He continued to be a strong contender for major titles well into the 1980s.

Beyond his tournament successes, Rin Kaiho is respected for his contributions to Go theory and his impact on the development of the game. He is known for his insightful commentary and analytical abilities. He remains an active figure in the Go community, teaching and promoting the game. He is considered one of the most influential Go players of the 20th century.
