Daffodils (film)
Daffodils is a 2019 New Zealand romantic drama film directed by David Stubbs. It is based on the stage play Daffodils, written by Rochelle Bright, which was inspired by the real-life love story of Bright's parents.
The film tells the story of Iris, who is summoned to a music festival and asked to recount the story of her parents' relationship. Through flashbacks and musical performances, the audience witnesses the unfolding romance between Rose, a glamorous singer, and Eric, a shy farmer. The film explores their enduring love, their struggles, and the challenges they face over the course of their lives together in 1960s and 70s New Zealand.
The film is notable for its integration of popular New Zealand music into the narrative. Songs by artists like Crowded House, Dave Dobbyn, and Bic Runga are woven into the storytelling, both as diegetic music and as expressive musical numbers performed by the actors.
Daffodils stars Rose McIver, George Mason, and Kimbra. It received mixed to positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising its performances, music, and visual style, while some found the narrative structure uneven.
