Devizes is a market town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is situated near the centre of the county and lies on the Kennet and Avon Canal.
History:
Devizes is believed to have originated as a Norman settlement. Devizes Castle, built by the Normans in the early 12th century, was a significant strategic and political center. The town grew around the castle and benefited from its presence. The castle no longer exists, having been destroyed in the 17th century during the English Civil War.
