E J-yong

E J-yong (born December 16, 1966) is a South Korean film director and screenwriter. He is known for his films that often explore themes of identity, sexuality, and social dynamics, often with a stylized visual approach. He frequently works in the melodrama and romantic comedy genres but also delves into more experimental and genre-bending territory.

E J-yong gained recognition for his debut feature film, An Affair (1998), which established his reputation for sophisticated storytelling and strong performances. His subsequent works include Asako in Ruby Shoes (2000), Untold Scandal (2003), a Joseon-era period drama adaptation of Les Liaisons dangereuses, and Dasepo Naughty Girls (2006), a sexually charged teen comedy. More recently, he has directed films such as Actresses (2009), an improvisational mockumentary featuring six top Korean actresses, Behind the Camera (2013), and The Bacchus Lady (2016), a film exploring the social issues surrounding elderly prostitution in South Korea. He has also directed the television series My Brilliant Life (2014), and the Netflix series Persona (2019), contributing one of the four short films in the anthology.
