Ten pence (British coin)

The ten pence (10p) coin is a denomination of sterling coinage, introduced in the United Kingdom in 1968 to replace the two shilling coin (florin) as part of decimalisation preparations. The "new" ten pence was initially identical in size and weight to the florin.

Following a period of co-circulation, the florin was demonetized in 1993. A smaller ten pence coin was introduced in September 1992, gradually replacing the larger version. The older, larger coins were removed from circulation to make way for the smaller, lighter coins.

The ten pence coin is legal tender for amounts up to £5 when presented as payment.

Design: The obverse of the coin has featured the portrait of the reigning monarch since its introduction. The reverse design has varied over the years, including heraldic badges and other symbols. The current circulating design, introduced in 2008, features a portion of the Royal Shield. When the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins are placed together, they form the complete shield.

Composition: The ten pence coin is currently composed of nickel-plated steel. Earlier versions were made of cupro-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel).

Size and Weight: The original, larger ten pence coin had a diameter of 28.5 mm and a weight of 11.31 grams. The current, smaller coin has a diameter of 24.5 mm and a weight of 6.5 grams.
