James Savage (banker)

James Savage (1784-1873) was a prominent Boston banker, antiquarian, and civic leader during the 19th century. He is best known for his involvement with several significant financial institutions and his work preserving and documenting early American history.

Savage was born in Boston and entered the world of finance at a young age. He became a cashier at the Boston Bank in 1814 and eventually rose to become its president, a position he held for many years. Under his leadership, the bank maintained a reputation for stability and responsible management.

Beyond banking, Savage was a dedicated antiquarian and historian. He played a key role in the Massachusetts Historical Society, serving as its president for many years and contributing significantly to its collections and publications. He was also a founder and trustee of the Provident Institution for Savings, another important Boston financial institution.

He is particularly remembered for his four-volume A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, Showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May, 1692, on the Basis of Farmer's Register, published between 1860 and 1862. This monumental work remains a valuable resource for genealogists tracing their ancestry to early New England families. It meticulously compiles information about the first settlers and their descendants, providing a foundation for subsequent genealogical research.
