Bendle

A bendle, in heraldry, is a common ordinary consisting of a diagonal band running from the dexter chief (the upper right, from the viewer's perspective) to the sinister base (the lower left). It is one-third the width of the field on a shield. A diminutive of the bendle is the bendlet, which is half the width of a bendle. If narrower still, it may be referred to as a ribbon. A bend can be blazoned "enhanced" if it is placed nearer the chief than the base. A bend sinister runs from the sinister chief to the dexter base, in the opposite direction. When a shield displays multiple bendlets, they are often blazoned as "bendlets sinister" if they run from sinister chief to dexter base, to distinguish them from the regular bendlets. A bendle can be charged with various heraldic symbols, adding further detail and meaning to the coat of arms.
