Telesto (mythology)

Telesto is a minor Oceanid nymph in Greek mythology. She is one of the three thousand daughters of Oceanus and Tethys.

Role and Associations

Telesto's name means "success" or "accomplishment" in ancient Greek. She is associated with good fortune, particularly in seafaring and trade. She is also sometimes linked to the healthy growth of plants and young creatures. Unlike some of her more prominent sisters, Telesto does not have a central, well-defined myth associated with her. She exists primarily as a named member of the Oceanids, representing a specific abstract concept.

Family and Lineage

As a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, Telesto is a sibling to a vast number of other Oceanids, including Doris, Styx, and Electra. Her uncles and aunts include the Titans, such as Cronus and Rhea.

Modern Interpretations

Telesto's role is minimal in classical literature, so modern interpretations are rare. She occasionally appears in lists of Oceanids or as a symbolic figure representing good fortune in the ocean. The name "Telesto" has also been used in other contexts, such as for a moon of Saturn.
