Stromness

Stromness is a town and port in Orkney, Scotland. It is the second-largest settlement in Orkney after Kirkwall. Located on the southwest coast of Mainland Orkney, Stromness has historically been a significant harbor for ships, particularly those seeking shelter or resupply.

Stromness's origins can be traced back to the Norse period. It grew considerably in the 17th and 18th centuries as a hub for ships of the Hudson's Bay Company and whaling fleets. Its location provided a convenient stopping point for ships embarking on long voyages to the Americas and the Arctic.

The town's main street, a winding thoroughfare built close to the shoreline, reflects its maritime history. Many of the buildings are constructed from local stone. Stromness is also known for its connections to Scapa Flow, a large body of water used as a British naval anchorage during both World Wars.

Today, Stromness remains a vital port for ferry services connecting Orkney to mainland Scotland (Scrabster). It is also a popular destination for tourists, drawn to its historic character, art galleries, and museums, including the Pier Arts Centre. Fishing and tourism are important components of the local economy. The town also serves as a gateway to the western Orkney islands and is close to various archaeological sites.
