Carol Hughes (politician)

Carol Hughes is a Canadian politician who currently serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing. She was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2008 federal election, representing the New Democratic Party (NDP).

Hughes has served on various parliamentary committees, often focusing on issues related to natural resources, industry, and Indigenous affairs. She has been a vocal advocate for rural and northern communities, highlighting their specific needs and challenges within the federal government. Her policy interests include access to affordable healthcare, support for seniors, and sustainable economic development in Northern Ontario.

Prior to her career in federal politics, Hughes worked as a constituency assistant for former NDP MP Maurice Harquail. Her experience in this role provided her with a deep understanding of the issues facing the constituents of Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing.

She has been re-elected in subsequent federal elections, including 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2021.
