Tom Smith (basketball)

Tom Smith is a former American college basketball player and coach. He is best known for his tenure as the head men's basketball coach at Appalachian State University from 1986 to 1999.

Smith played college basketball at Western Carolina University. After his playing career, he began coaching at the high school level before transitioning to assistant coaching positions in college.

At Appalachian State, Smith amassed a record of 181-197. He led the Mountaineers to the Southern Conference Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1988. He also coached several notable players during his time at Appalachian State.

After leaving Appalachian State, Smith continued to be involved in basketball, including scouting and consulting roles.
