Argoat

Argoat is a Breton word referring to the interior, wooded region of Brittany, France, in contrast to the coastal region known as Armor (or Arvor). The term evokes a landscape characterized by forests, heaths, and undulating hills. Historically, Argoat was associated with a more rural and traditional way of life compared to the more maritime-influenced culture of the Armor. The distinction between Argoat and Armor represents a fundamental geographical and cultural division within Brittany. Argoat can also be understood as a cultural identifier, encompassing the traditions, folklore, and language (Breton) more commonly associated with the inland regions. While the contrast is not always sharp, Argoat signifies the heartland of Breton identity and heritage.
