Hurricane Celeste (1972)
Hurricane Celeste (1972) was a moderately strong Pacific hurricane that existed in the central Pacific Ocean during August 1972. Celeste developed from a tropical disturbance far to the southeast of Hawaii. It gradually intensified as it moved generally westward. Celeste reached its peak intensity as a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale with maximum sustained winds estimated at 100 mph (160 km/h).
Celeste posed a potential threat to the Hawaiian Islands, causing the issuance of hurricane watches and warnings. However, the hurricane ultimately passed well to the south of the island chain. While no direct landfall occurred, the storm generated high surf along the southern coasts of the Hawaiian Islands. These waves caused minor coastal flooding and beach erosion.
No fatalities were reported as a result of Hurricane Celeste. The storm's impact was relatively minimal due to its distance from land and the timely warnings issued by meteorological agencies. Celeste eventually weakened and dissipated over the central Pacific Ocean.
