Alderano Cybo-Malaspina (1552–1606)
Alderano Cybo-Malaspina (born 1552, died 1606) was an Italian nobleman who ruled as Marquis of Massa and Prince of Carrara from 1568 until his death. He was a member of the Cybo-Malaspina family, a powerful lineage with connections to both Genoa and the Papal States.
Alderano succeeded his father, Alberico I Cybo-Malaspina, and continued the family's policy of maintaining neutrality between the major powers of the region. His reign saw further consolidation of the family's control over Massa and Carrara, and he invested in infrastructure and artistic patronage.
He is remembered for his role in urban development, particularly in Massa, where he commissioned buildings and expanded the city's defenses. Alderano also oversaw the development of the marble quarries of Carrara, a crucial source of wealth for the principality. He encouraged foreign artisans to settle in the region to enhance the quality of marble production.
Alderano married Margherita de' Medici, daughter of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. This marriage strengthened the family's political ties and added prestige to the Cybo-Malaspina dynasty. The couple had several children, including Carlo I Cybo-Malaspina, who succeeded him as Marquis of Massa and Prince of Carrara. His reign represented a period of relative stability and prosperity for the principality.
