Mediastan

Mediastan is a neologism, coined and popularized by British-German filmmaker Johannes Holzhausen, referring to the region of Central Asia and its surrounding areas, particularly those with historical or cultural connections to the Silk Road. The term is often used in the context of independent filmmaking and travel, evoking a sense of undiscovered or underreported territories, a perceived lack of Western media influence, and a return to more traditional or authentic cultural expressions.

The term is not a recognized geopolitical designation and is not used in official governmental or academic contexts. Its usage is largely confined to artistic and journalistic circles, often employed to describe documentaries or travelogues focused on the region. Mediastan attempts to capture a sense of the region's geographic vastness, cultural diversity, and geopolitical complexity, while also suggesting an alternative perspective on these areas, diverging from mainstream Western media portrayals. The name is a portmanteau of "media" and the suffix "-stan," common in many Central Asian country names (e.g., Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan).

While it can be seen as a useful shorthand for describing a certain genre of travel and documentary content, the term has also been criticized for its potential to exoticize or oversimplify the region, conflating disparate cultures and political realities under a single, somewhat ambiguous banner.
