Owthorne

Owthorne is a deserted village located in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was lost to coastal erosion by the North Sea during the 19th century. The village's history dates back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as "Otrintone."

The encroachment of the sea was a gradual process, but by the early 19th century, significant portions of the village were regularly inundated by tides. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, was eventually undermined and collapsed in the 1820s. Most of the villagers relocated inland, often to nearby settlements like Easington.

Today, very little remains of Owthorne. At low tide, some remnants of the village can occasionally be seen, although the area is constantly subject to further erosion. The loss of Owthorne serves as a stark reminder of the power of the sea and the vulnerability of coastal communities to environmental change. The name "Owthorne" is sometimes used in local history discussions and publications relating to coastal erosion in the region.
