Automatic (The Jesus and Mary Chain album)
Automatic is the fourth studio album by the Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain. It was released in October 1989 on Blanco y Negro Records.
The album marked a shift away from the band's earlier, more feedback-drenched sound, incorporating elements of krautrock and synth-pop into their typically noisy, melodic style. This change in direction was influenced by their experimentation with drum machines and synthesizers during the recording process.
Notable tracks on Automatic include "Head On," which was later covered by the Pixies, and "Blues From a Gun," which showcases the album's blend of distorted guitars and electronic percussion. While the album received mixed reviews upon its release, it has since been regarded as a significant and influential work in the band's discography, demonstrating their willingness to explore new sonic territories while retaining their core aesthetic. It also reached the UK Top 20 album charts. The title "Automatic" reflects the band's intention to create music that felt intuitive and almost machine-like in its precision and rhythm.
