Peter Pan (1950 musical)

The 1950 musical Peter Pan was a stage production written by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by J. M. Barrie (adapted from his play and novel) and others. It starred Jean Arthur as Peter Pan and Boris Karloff in the dual role of Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. This musical adaptation is distinct from the better-known 1954 musical Peter Pan starring Mary Martin with music by Mark "Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne.

The 1950 Peter Pan premiered in New York City at the Imperial Theatre on April 24, 1950, and ran for 321 performances. While it received positive reviews, particularly for Arthur's performance, it has been overshadowed by the later, more commercially successful adaptation. The Bernstein score includes songs such as "Dream With Me" and "Build This House."

The 1950 version is considered a more direct adaptation of Barrie's original play, retaining much of the original dialogue and stage directions. The musical's revival history is sparse compared to the 1954 version. Recordings of the original production are limited, making it a less accessible version for contemporary audiences.
