Harper Valley PTA (film)
Harper Valley PTA is a 1978 American comedy-drama film directed by Richard Bennett. It is based on the popular 1968 country song "Harper Valley PTA," written by Tom T. Hall and performed by Jeannie C. Riley.
The film stars Barbara Eden as Stella Johnson, a widowed single mother who lives in the small town of Harper Valley, Ohio. Stella clashes with the Harper Valley Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), a group of judgmental and hypocritical women led by Flora Simpson Reilly (Nanette Fabray). After Stella's daughter Jamie is unfairly disciplined by the school, Stella attends a PTA meeting and exposes the secrets and misdeeds of the members, revealing their own hypocrisy.
The film expands upon the storyline of the original song, providing more backstory and character development. It explores themes of hypocrisy, small-town morality, and the challenges faced by single parents. While the song focuses on a single confrontation, the film develops the conflict between Stella and the PTA throughout the narrative.
