Helmet (band)
Helmet is an American alternative metal band formed in New York City in 1989. Founded by vocalist and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has been influential in the development of post-hardcore and alternative metal music. Known for their dissonant, riff-driven sound and Hamilton's distinctive vocal style, the band has released several critically acclaimed albums.
History:
Helmet was formed after Hamilton, who had previously studied jazz guitar, moved to New York City. The original lineup consisted of Hamilton, Peter Mengede (guitar), Henry Bogdan (bass), and John Stanier (drums). They quickly gained a following in the New York underground music scene with their aggressive and unconventional sound.
The band released their debut album, Strap It On, in 1990 on Amphetamine Reptile Records. The album's raw energy and innovative song structures caught the attention of major labels. Helmet subsequently signed with Interscope Records, releasing Meantime in 1992. Meantime became their breakthrough album, achieving gold certification and solidifying their place in the alternative rock landscape.
Following Meantime, Helmet released Betty in 1994, which showcased a more experimental and diverse sound. While initially polarizing some fans, Betty is now considered a significant work in their discography. Internal tensions and creative differences led to the departure of Mengede and Bogdan after the release of Betty.
The band continued with a revamped lineup, releasing Aftertaste in 1997. Helmet disbanded shortly after, with Hamilton pursuing other musical projects.
In 2004, Hamilton revived Helmet with a new lineup. Since then, they have released several more albums, including Size Matters (2004), Monochrome (2006), Seeing Eye Dog (2010), and Dead to the World (2016). The band continues to tour and record, maintaining a dedicated fanbase.
Musical Style and Influence:
Helmet's music is characterized by its heavy, angular guitar riffs, unconventional time signatures, and Hamilton's often-shouted vocals. They are often associated with the noise rock and alternative metal scenes. Helmet's use of drop tunings and dissonant chords has influenced numerous bands in genres such as post-hardcore, alternative metal, and nu-metal. Bands like Deftones, Korn, and Pantera have cited Helmet as an influence.
