Parahuna

A Parahuna (ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ) is a Punjabi word that translates to "guest" or "visitor" in English. However, the word carries a deeper cultural significance than a simple translation suggests. It encompasses the importance of hospitality in Punjabi culture and the respect afforded to anyone who visits one's home. Welcoming a parahuna is considered a sacred duty and a great honour. The host is expected to provide the guest with the best possible treatment, offering food, drink, comfortable accommodation, and engaging in polite conversation to ensure the guest's comfort and well-being. The concept of parahunachari (hospitality) is deeply ingrained in Punjabi social norms. While anyone visiting one's home is technically a parahuna, the term is often used with particular emphasis when referring to someone from out of town or someone who is visiting for an extended period.
