Isaac P. Gray

Isaac P. Gray (October 22, 1828 – February 14, 1895) was an American politician and businessman from Indiana. He served as the 18th and 20th Governor of Indiana, as well as a United States Senator.

Gray was born in East Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Ohio in his youth and later to Union, Indiana, where he established himself as a successful merchant. He began his political career as a Democrat but later became a Republican due to his opposition to the expansion of slavery. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives and the Indiana State Senate.

During the Civil War, Gray served as a Colonel in the Indiana Legion. After the war, he returned to politics and served as Lieutenant Governor under Governor James D. Williams. Upon Williams' death in 1880, Gray became Governor. He was subsequently elected to a full term as Governor in 1884, this time as a Democrat, having switched parties again.

As Governor, Gray focused on fiscal responsibility and promoting industrial development in Indiana. He was a strong advocate for temperance and supported legislation aimed at regulating the sale of alcohol. After his second term as Governor, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1893, where he served until his death in 1895. He died in Mexico City while serving as the U.S. Minister to Mexico.

Gray was a complex and controversial figure, known for his political flexibility and shrewdness. His switches between the Democratic and Republican parties reflected the changing political landscape of the time and his own evolving views. He left a significant mark on Indiana politics and played a key role in the state's development during the late 19th century.
