Joe Mercer (footballer, born 1889)

Joe Mercer (born Joseph Mercer, 21 January 1889 – 22 August 1960) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre-half. He is not to be confused with the more well-known Joe Mercer who played for Arsenal and managed Manchester City.

Mercer was born in Ellesmere, Shropshire. He began his career at Ellesmere Town before moving to Shrewsbury Town in 1907. He then joined Aston Villa in 1909, where he made over 100 appearances in the First Division. He moved to Notts County in 1914 and played for them until the suspension of league football due to the First World War.

During the war, he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery. After the war, he returned to Notts County, playing for them until 1922. He then finished his career with Wellington Town.

Mercer was known as a tough and reliable defender. He died in 1960 at the age of 71.
