The Mehlis Report (book)

The Mehlis Report refers to the findings of the United Nations International Independent Investigation Commission (UNIIIC) established to investigate the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on February 14, 2005. The Commission was headed by German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis for the initial phase of its investigation.

The report, officially titled "Report of the International Independent Investigation Commission established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1595 (2005)," was delivered to the United Nations Security Council in stages, with the first report being presented in October 2005. It implicated high-ranking Syrian and Lebanese officials in the assassination, citing evidence obtained through witness testimonies, forensic analysis, and documentary evidence.

The findings of the Mehlis Report had significant political repercussions in Lebanon and internationally. It led to increased international pressure on Syria, and contributed to a period of heightened political instability in Lebanon. The report spurred further investigations and inquiries related to Hariri's assassination and the subsequent political climate. Subsequent reports were released by later heads of the UNIIIC, after Mehlis stepped down from his position.
