Bill Doss
Bill Doss (1968 – 2012) was an American musician, best known as a founding member, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter for the Elephant Six Collective band The Olivia Tremor Control. He also played in other bands associated with the collective, including Beulah and The Sunshine Fix, his own solo project.
Doss was born in Ruston, Louisiana. He moved to Athens, Georgia, and became a significant figure in the burgeoning music scene of the early 1990s. He, along with Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum, and Robert Schneider, formed the core of the Elephant Six Recording Company.
The Olivia Tremor Control, formed in 1993, released several critically acclaimed albums, including Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996) and Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One (1999). Doss's songwriting and instrumental contributions were integral to the band's distinctive psychedelic pop sound.
After The Olivia Tremor Control's initial breakup in 2000, Doss continued to write and record music with The Sunshine Fix. He also toured with other bands and contributed to various recording projects.
Doss participated in the reunion of The Olivia Tremor Control in 2010, leading to performances at music festivals and a planned new album.
Bill Doss died of a suspected aneurysm on July 30, 2012, at the age of 43. His death was widely mourned within the indie music community. His contributions to psychedelic pop music and the Elephant Six Collective continue to be celebrated.
