John Hales (archdeacon of Newark)

John Hales (died 1656) was an English clergyman who served as Archdeacon of Newark.

Hales was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, where he was a Fellow. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1607 and his Master of Arts degree in 1610. He became a Fellow of Eton College in 1613.

Hales was ordained as a priest and held several ecclesiastical positions. He was appointed Archdeacon of Newark in 1633, a position he held until his death. He was known for his learning and theological abilities. He was a close friend of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, and shared Laud's High Church principles. During the English Civil War, Hales remained loyal to the Royalist cause. He was sequestered from his ecclesiastical preferments by the Parliamentarians. He died in 1656.
