David Laing (antiquary)
David Laing (1793 – 1878) was a Scottish antiquary, bookseller, and librarian. Born in Edinburgh, he was a significant figure in the 19th-century Scottish literary and historical scene, known for his extensive knowledge of Scottish history, literature, and bibliography.
Laing's early career involved working in his father's bookshop, where he developed a deep appreciation for rare books and manuscripts. This led him to become a prominent bookseller himself, specializing in Scottish historical and literary works.
He was particularly renowned for his expertise in early Scottish poetry. He edited and published numerous volumes of Scottish literature, including the works of David Lyndsay, John Knox, and William Dunbar. His editions were notable for their meticulous scholarship and detailed annotations.
In 1823, Laing was appointed librarian of the Signet Library in Edinburgh, a position he held for over 50 years. During his tenure, he greatly enriched the library's collection, acquiring many rare and valuable items. He was also active in various learned societies, including the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, of which he served as secretary.
Laing amassed an extensive private collection of books, manuscripts, and other historical materials, which was dispersed after his death. His contributions to the study of Scottish history and literature were considerable, and he is remembered as one of the leading antiquaries of his time. His meticulous scholarship and dedication to preserving Scottish cultural heritage left a lasting legacy.
