Khugaung

Khugaung is a traditional percussion instrument from Manipur, India. It is a barrel-shaped, double-headed drum, considered one of the primary percussion instruments used in Manipuri classical and folk music. The Khugaung is essential in Lai Haraoba, a ritualistic festival celebrated by the Meitei community, and other traditional Manipuri dance and music forms.

The drum shell is typically made of wood, although other materials may be used in some instances. The heads of the drum are usually made of animal skin, stretched and tightened to create different tones. The instrument is played by striking the heads with the hands. Different strokes and hand positions produce a variety of sounds, contributing to the rhythmic complexity of Manipuri music. The Khugaung often accompanies other traditional Manipuri instruments such as the Pena (a stringed instrument) and the flute. Its rhythmic patterns provide the foundation and drive for many traditional musical performances.
