John Bingham (runner)
John Bingham, often referred to as "The Penguin," is an American runner, author, and motivational speaker best known for his advocacy of running and fitness for individuals of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. He championed the idea that anyone can be a runner, regardless of pace or physical limitations, and encouraged people to embrace their own personal journey in fitness.
Bingham gained prominence through his column, "The Penguin Chronicles," in Runner's World magazine. The column, which ran from 1996 to 2005, detailed his own experiences as a slower, less traditionally athletic runner and provided inspiration and advice to others who felt excluded from the running community. He stressed the importance of self-acceptance, enjoyment, and the intrinsic benefits of running, rather than focusing solely on competition or performance.
Beyond his writing, Bingham was a popular speaker at running events and workshops, further spreading his message of inclusivity and encouragement. He emphasized that the goal of running should be personal fulfillment and overall well-being. His work significantly contributed to a more welcoming and accepting atmosphere within the running world, inspiring countless individuals to start or continue running. He authored several books, including No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running and The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Beginners.
