The Crossing (2014 film)
The Crossing (simplified Chinese: 太平轮; traditional Chinese: 太平輪; pinyin: Tàipíng Lún) is a two-part 2014 Chinese epic romance-war drama film directed by John Woo and starring Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Song Hye-kyo, Huang Xiaoming, Tong Dawei, and Masami Nagasawa.
The film is based on the true story of the Taiping steamer sinking in the White Sand Shoals near Shanghai on January 27, 1949, which led to the deaths of over 1,500 passengers and crew. The Crossing tells the interwoven stories of three couples whose lives are affected by the Chinese Civil War and the tragic sinking of the Taiping.
The first part of the film, The Crossing Part 1, was released on December 2, 2014. The Crossing Part 2 was released on July 30, 2015. The film depicts the tumultuous period of Chinese history between the end of World War II and the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. It explores themes of love, loss, hope, and the human cost of conflict. The film garnered significant attention for its scale, star-studded cast, and John Woo's return to directing large-scale action dramas.
